Did you know you can link multiple user accounts to your boat page on noforeignland? In this article, I’ll explain how this helps cruising couples or families manage their boat, and I’ll show you how you can add your family members to your boat page.
All user accounts linked to a boat will be listed as crew on that boat’s page. Open a few boat pages and you’ll soon find one with multiple crew members listed. For example, Helena and I are both listed as crew on our boat, Amalia:
This allows us to both make changes to our boat, like moving it on the map, changing the “About us” text, adding photos and adding stories to our journey, etc. It also means that when someone sees our boat page, they can chat with either one of us directly.
Having separate user accounts makes using noforeignland a more personal experience too. It allows us to follow different boats, have our own chat channels with other users, and have our own lists of saved sailing destinations.
As you can see, listing all crew on a boat has a number of advantages.
Sending a crew invitation
Any crew member can invite other noforeignland users to become crew on their boat. So, if someone you sail with has already added your boat to the map, ask them to send you a crew invitation.
If you already added your boat to the noforeignland map, and would like to invite your family members to join as crew, then follow these steps:
1) Ask the person you want to invite for their noforeignland username
Your username starts with an @ symbol and is shown at the top of your profile page, and at the top of the main menu when you are signed in to the app.
Here you can see my username is @steve.neal:
2) Open your boat page, tap on Settings → Add crew
3) Enter the username for the person you want to add and send them an invite
4) After a minute or two, your invite will appear in their notifications
Once they have opened the notification and accepted your invitation, they will be added to your boat’s crew list.
As already mentioned, crew members can all make the same updates to your boat so only invite people you trust. If a person isn’t sailing with you, but wants to receive updates on your travels, then it’s better to ask them to follow your boat instead.
UDPATE: You can only link one boat to user account. If you and whoever you sail with have both already registered your boat (i.e. there are two on the map), then before completing the above steps one of you should delete their boat (Main menu → Settings). The person who didn’t delete their boat can then invite the other to join the remaining boat as crew.
Great article Steve!
Thank you Richard…. Helena and I got asked about this a couple of times last week so it felt like we should write it up and share.
